Every year around November, The Holiday Card Program sends out letters to any
artist who is interested in applying to be the new Holiday Card Artist. All samples have to be submitted by
March 1st and finished paintings are to be completed by May 15th. The letter will contain ideas for the
subjects, but basically they are all Philadelphia scenes with two skylines, one Boathouse Row and another
such as Independence Hall.
If you would like to receive information about the 2005 Holiday Card Artist, please go to Contact and send us your name and address.
For the past eighteen years the Women’s Board of the American Cancer Society, Southeast Division, has produced original Holiday Cards that are sold to corporations and individuals in Philadelphia, the suburbs and across the state. Each year we choose an artist who paints four original local scenes suitable for our Holiday Cards. The artist donates the rights for us to reproduce these onto the cards with a one time only printing. We pay for the printing of the cards and the brochures. If the artist wants to have prints then he or she pays for them and we help market them with 40% to the American Cancer Society and 60% to the artist if we receive the order. Of course the artist may sell the prints to galleries or to individuals without a percentage going to the American Cancer Society. All the scenes must look wintery, but not Christmassy—just the feeling of Christmas. We like lots of snow and sometimes a wreath on the door is acceptable. We always have a Boathouse Row, two skylines and then another scene. However, the corporations are so fond of the skylines that we probably should do three! This year we did four scenes: Independence Hall with the Liberty Bell, Philadelphia Skyline from Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia Skyline from Camden and Boathouse Row. For the 2005 cards we were thinking of night scenes with lots of sparkling lights. City Hall has been cleaned on the outside and they now have it lighted, so we would like a painting of it from South Broad Street. Boathouse Row at night with their twinkling lights. The lighted Benjamin Franklin Bridge and the skyline with the lighted buildings in the background. The Parkway view from the Art Museum is always popular with the lighted City Hall at the end. Maybe the lights and a fading sunset reflected in the buildings. Or perhaps you know of some lighted well-known Philadelphia scene that would be appropriate for our cards. If you are interested in being considered for the 2005 Holiday Card Program, please submit four sample paintings of the proposed scenes in the card format (5” x 7”.) When the artist is accepted then he or she paints a large painting of the scenes which the printer then reduces to the 5” x 7” format. This way it is easier to paint in the detail. When sending the samples, some artists paint larger, zerox them down to size and then send both the original and the copies. These samples are due by March 15, 2005. We will make our decision immediately and if you are chosen we will ask for the finished paintings by May 15, 2005. After they are approved by the committee and any corrections made they will go on to the printer for the 2005 cards.
